"After the conversation, the players decided to have more of a players-only practice, and from what I heard, it went pretty good,"Like a parent telling a kid ok fine its up to you but we'll see whos right. If, and more accurately when, the Mavs lose this series and the rumors of Avery's firing commence, do you think the quotes from the Mavs players will be more along the lines of "We'd love to have Avery back, we would hate to see him go" or "Its not in our hands, its a tough situation"? I'll take the latter. I have little doubt that Avery won't be the coach of the Mavs next year.
"Somebody amongst the players decided that they thought they needed some sort of practice."
"We're in a situation where I don't know if we need another drill,"
"We've been having drills and scrimmages since the first day of training camp and if you don't have it by now, I don't know if you're going to have a CliffsNotes session and get it. ""I was just thinking about keeping the legs fresh and meeting on the plane. But they decided they needed to go down on the court and do something. We'll see what type of carryover it has."

Avery Gasping for Air
If it wasn't already clear before, it should be pretty evident now that Avery has completely lost this team. The Mavs players decided to have their own practice even though Avery had already cancelled practice. Judging from Avery's quotes, he doesn't appear to be too happy about it. Being the ego-maniac control freak that he is, I'm not surprised.

what specifically has avery done to make him fire-able? i blame the demise largely on the kidd trade and the loss of harris, but i realize the heat collapse and golden state debacle predated that. do you think there's someone better to come in and coach?
i am pretty sure that as soon as we fire him, he'll be hired by another team immediately...he's rumored to be in the running for the knicks job, and i could see popovich hiring him to sit next to him for a year or two before becoming spurs coach. i just don't like the idea of firing a guy that would be immediately picked up...that means the problem probably isn't with him, but with the situation or the team. if josh howard wants to be an idiot and pout and suck, then trade his butt. i'd hold onto jet, dirk, and bass, and then just nuke this thing otherwise. since we just traded away our 1st round picks for the next 20 years in the kidd trade, things don't look good. i think firing avery would only compound the problem.
that being said, i admit some relative ignorance on the subject, and i'd love to hear your insight here.
this one's on avery. his style is not for this team, not anymore. his pg is not a youngin who needs to be hand fed every single offensive play call. avery ok'd the kidd trade cause he felt like he needed a play-calling pg, yet avery hasn't loosened up enough for kidd to be effective. great quote from an article on espn: "Johnson was a good point guard in the NBA -- but Kidd has been much better."
the dude is too much of a control freak.
he thinks way too highly of himself and his "system."
he likes "veterans" too much.
i'm fairly certain the players are just tired of his barking.
those are just a few of the many problems he has/is. hope that kind of helps.
if you can't figure a way to make a contender out of two hall of famers, then chances are you're not the right fit.
i'm still torn between firing his ass and letting him do some heavy tinkering with his playbook/coaching style.
oh yeah, how's del harris for head coach sound?
he's the kind of coach i really believe would work well here. why? cause it worked before when he was working behind avery.
i think i might be on par with comparing this switch to the parcells/wade phillips switch. though it didnt work out too well in the playoffs :(
dude charles, avery overcoaches, he makes dumb substitutions e.g. JJ f-ing Berea, and HE was being the Kidd trade disaster. I promise you he was lobbying for it as much as anyone. it's not all avery's fault but yes he is part to blame and he's lost the team so you can get a new team or you can get a new coach.
